Understanding Kids’ Summer Hunger and How Communities Help

As the school year comes to a close, summer introduces a different rhythm for many families. However, it can also lead to uncertainty regarding reliable access to meals. Approximately one in six children in the U.S. experiences food insecurity during the summer, highlighting the importance of communities recognizing and addressing these challenges.

How Community Organizations Help Fill the Gap

Food shelves, meal programs, and youth-focused nonprofits provide essential support to help ensure children continue to have access to nutritious meals and critical resources.

Magnifi is proud to be part of this effort through its 3 Essentials program, which focuses on meeting basic needs: food, clothing, and shelter. By investing in and partnering with local organizations, Magnifi helps expand access to these essentials and strengthen the support systems that families rely on.

Magnifi partners with the following organizations through our 3 Essentials program to provide food and other resources: SACA Food
Shelf and Thrift Store
, NACE Food Shelf & Clothing Closet, CROSS Services, ROCORI Food Shelf, Wadena Food Shelf, Churches United, Paynesville Community Connection, Catholic Charities of St. Cloud, and Lutheran Social Services Pathways 4 Youth

  • Provide consistent, nutritious meals for children and families

  • Offer clothing, hygiene items, and other everyday essentials

  • Connect individuals to safe spaces, housing support, and youth services

These efforts are powered by something bigger than any one organization—community support. Donations, volunteer time, and member involvement all help make this work possible.

Why This Matters for Families

While a shift in routine might seem small, it can have a huge impact on families juggling tight budgets. The absence of school meals during summer means families might find themselves stretching groceries and seeking new assistance.

That’s where community programs and the dedication of organizations like Magnifi shine the brightest! By ensuring consistent access to crucial resources, these initiatives don't just provide meals; they help create stability and reduce stress for children and families, enhancing overall well-being.

Supporting Essential Needs Year-Round

While summer hunger is an important focus, access to essential resources is a year-round need for many families. Access to food, shelter, and clothing plays a critical role in supporting stability and well-being within our communities.

Magnifi’s 3 Essentials program reflects an ongoing commitment to meeting these needs, not just during one season, but every day. By supporting local organizations and investing in community partnerships, Magnifi helps build stronger, more resilient communities for the long term.
